Just like you can spot a herd of deer from 100 metres you are able to do the same with nerds when we are congregated together.
They are easy to spot, they are the group of people, normally wearing dark clothes and proudly displaying the name of some heavy metal band or slogan from nerd culture such as “it’s not pink, it’s lightish red”. We can also be seen sporting the original brick of a gameboy and playing pokemon, believing ourselves to be cool as we discuss the finer points of Magic The Gathering rules and strategies.
It also leads us to some interesting scenarios, eg, there was a group of us in fibbers last friday, now, for those of you who don’t know fibbers, it is a grimy heavy metal bar where a shirt is considered fancy. It’s a great bar and one of my mates plays there regularly as drummer in the band apocalyptic masterpiece but it’s still a dive.
So anyway, there we were, all in black, with leather and corsets and big rocker boots as far as the eye can see and what are we doing? Discussing pokemon and who is what pokemon… We came to various conclusions such as Aislinn is jiggleypuff, Kyri is vulpix, Liam would be onix and I would be either machoke or else blastoise
This of course was within earshot of everyone that was walking past and there was not a single strange look or raised eyebrow. Then later on after listening to some of the bands screaming about decapitation and the death and pain that was going to be coming we headed downstairs and Cheryl saw the jukebox. Now in a place like fibbers what do you think was picked by one of the group? My Lovely Horse from Father Ted. Laughing and screaming ensues as people in huge boots, leather, corsets and enough white face makeup to fuel the cast of twilight jump up to sing along to the song about a lovely horse who is no longer a pony.
Move on to other topics such as walking down the street and another thing can be noticed. Posters for films… Yesterday I was walking down the street and I saw a poster for the new X Men film, just a cursory glance before my jaw dropped! I was appalled, I was speechless, I was devastated! Scott Summers (not yet Cyclops seen as he had not yet joined X Men) had his visor that is used to hinder his power!!! I went on about it for 10 minutes to Cheryl who was adding in her own bits about it before moving on to the other flaws in the poster. It was like the posters for the Prince Caspian film. In the posters the girl had the arrow nocked the wrong way for shooting and I pointed it out to everyone that would listen.
Then there are other things like a bit of flirting. An example of that would be today where we are trying to come up with a challenge so I recommend an arm wrestle, it’s denied saying that I would destroy her to which I retaliated but I thought my muscles were only air. The response is yeah, air of steel, you are Wolverine except twice as strong and twice as sexy, of course warranting a response of and I would pick you over the Black Canary any day. Laughing about how nerdy we are follows that and we move on to other topics regarding comics and the such.
People say that the meek shall inherit the earth but personally I think the nerds shall freak the meek and claim it in the name of the FSM or something like that…
